How to Prevent Sports Injuries

by: Ipe

Tips you can use to stay safe whatever sport you play

Following are some general rules for injury prevention no matter what sport you play. While it is impossible to prevent every injury, research suggests that injury rates could be reduced by 25% if athletes took appropriate preventative action, including:

1. Be in proper physical condition to play a sport.
Keep in mind the weekend warrior has a high rate of injury. If you play any sports, you should adequately train for that sport. It is a mistake to expect the sport itself to get you into shape. Many injuries can be prevented by following a regular conditioning program of exercises designed specifically for your sport.

2. Know and abide by the rules of the sport.
The rules are designed, in part, to keep things safe. This is extremely important for anyone who participates in a contact sport. Rules of conduct, including illegal blocks and tackles are enforced to keep athletes healthy. Know them. Follow them.

3. Wear appropriate protective gear and equipment.
Protective pads, mouth guards, helmets, gloves and other equipment is not for sissies. Protective equipment that fits you well can safe your knees, hands, teeth, eyes, and head. Never play without your safety gear.

4. Rest.
Athletes with high consecutive days of training, have more injuries. While many athletes think the more they train, the better they'll play, this is a misconception. Rest is a critical component of proper training. Rest can make you stronger and prevent injuries of overuse, fatigue and poor judgment.

5. Always warm up before playing.
Warm muscles are less susceptible to injuries. The proper warm up is essential for injury prevention. Make sure your warm up suits your sport. You may simply start your sport slowly, or practice specific stretching or mental rehearsal depending upon your activity.

6. Avoid playing when very tired or in pain.
This is a set-up far a careless injury. Pain indicates a problem. You need to pay attention to warning signs your body provides

Research provides us with helpful clues about the cause of sports injury. There are two factors that outweigh the rest when it comes to predicting a sports injury. They are:

* Having a history of injury. Previous injuries to a muscle, or joint tend to develop into chronic problem areas for many athletes. It is extremely important to warm up, and stretch previously injured parts.

* A high number of consecutive days of training. Recovery days reduce injury rates by giving muscles and connective tissues an opportunity to repair between training sessions

Summer Beach Frisbee Tourney RESULTS

by: Roxanne Lu

HERO ADDICTS!!!

Hey, guys!!! We just like to thank all of you who participated and supported (in body, mind and in spirit) the 1st SUMMER BEACH FRISBEE TOURNEY last weekend!

It has been our pleasure organizing this event knowing that you guys were always there to support and encourage us to make things happen. Our job was made easy coz you crazy viruses are all "cowboys" (tama ba ang word?) and not picky and arte on things - and that's the SPIRIT we're talking about! Everything is driven for the love of the game! I salute you, guys! HERO Energy Drink kept us all alive and kicking, plus may tossing and catching pa!!!

Congratulations to RapRap and Jenny for naturally showing the best disc spirits in the tourney! You guys deserve those Havaianas! Raprap - he showed us that giving your best in the field doesn't mean you can't have fun along the way. He smiles humbly whenever he misses a catch, shyly gives a thank you whenever we go crazy over his goal points, jumps to the beach to cool his feet every chance he gets but then jumps right in the hot sand to play again, and he even saved the overworked francis from "subbing" to the other team by saying: "ako nalang play sa team nila, kuya." And Jenny - the girl who played multiple roles in the tourney: half-time entertainment as POI dancer, statistician/scorer, a nasty player and blocker of Team Voltes V, and the gamely Showgirl of Team Voltes V. In addition, she's the only player who runs to each member of the opposing team and her own teammate to congratulate them for a great game. All of us just can't wait to leave the field to drink and rest, but she says around to offer a warm handshake.

Well, i won't make this long coz i texted everybody narin last night... from the heart yun, mga loko kayo! Kayo tlaga ang the best! And I personally would like to thank the carebear master, Francis, for EVERTYTHING! Tama si Jenny, lahat ng dirty work ikaw gumawa! You made everyone's summer "perfectly fun" and memorable!!!

We'll surely miss you, Coach... and we'll miss you, too, KIKO!!!!! Thanks for opening yourself up to us - grabe na bonding with the team!

Anyways, See ya all tomorrow!!!! HUgs!!!

Kiko from the Block - the blocker next to the MVP....thanks for reminding me of finding that purpose in law school and the pleasure of not thingking.... you also made our Summer memorable! FRISBEE with YOU! Thanks for patiently teaching me how to play with the zips. You're one good coach... but you had one poor student.

PykIdoL - strategist ever! and most of the times effective....idol handler.... respectable Founding Father of the Not Thinking Club, but the primary violator! hehe....when you volt in with Aldrin, you're one heck of a blasttttttttt!!!!! specially the 100 ways to use a lighsaber! hanep!!!!

impt read: Spirit of the Game

by: Roxanne Lu

Dear STD Viruses:

For the past month, we have seen our little and humble South Team Durian family grow from ten heads to beyond forty. We eagerly step into the grounds night after night to toss discs with new and old friends, and nothing can be more satisfying than to exchange shrieks and high-fives to a stranger over a point brilliantly scored. Not only are we spreading the love of the sport, we are building good friendships along the way.

But as we teach the basics of throwing and catching disc, the rules of playing Ultimate Frisbee, and how to joke around STD-style, let's not forget to impart to every player the sense of responsibility the moment he begins playing Ultimate: and that is to keep the Spirit of the Game alive!

Why all the sudden emphasis on Spirit of the Game? Before we started the summer clinic, Francis and i have requested (alright, so i begged!) Mr. F to lend us some discs to use for the entire summer. The good guy that he is (and I'm sure Mark can testify on this), F sent us the white discs that we use every game, on the condition that we must not forget to incorporate in our teachings the Spirit of the Game. Excerpts from his email:

"I have in my possession several discs, donated by several philanthropic individuals from Canada and Australia, which are actually meant for activities such as yours...to Spread the Love that is Ultimate. I'm giving some to players from Cebu and the rest, I can give to your group.

However, you must make me a promise. Promise me that you will teach your beginners the Spirit of the Game (insert inspirational music here...). I don't mean the type of "spirit" that is just associated with cheers and high fives and all the merry-making that goes on in a game. By "Spirit", I mean a real LOVE for the GAME. They must play the game because they enjoy playing it and because it should bring out the best aspects of a person. Be COURTEOUS to other players and RESPECT them and the calls they make. Make diligent efforts to LEARN and KNOW the rules of the game. Try hard to be the best Ultimate players that they can be. And help in Spreading the Love for Ultimate.

With what you are going to do, you will be planting the seeds of the game in your community. Make sure that the crops those seeds produce will grow properly. (music fades...)"

You guys know how passionate frisbee players are about Spirit of the Game because you have been in the field yourselves, and you know how it feels to find security in knowing that you can play a clean game through and through. So as our family becomes bigger, insert the Spirit talk in your chikkas and Da Vinci discussions. That, or you can forward this to them in a sort-of chain letter way. haha.. nah.. kidding! How scary. But, seriously, it's not just coach Manong Francis who should teach our beloved newbies about this, but it's everyone's role.

Below are articles and opinions-shared about Spirit of the Game. This will give us a clear understanding about it and how we can share the same thinking and practice to our player-friends.

Happy Tossing and See ya on the GREENS and the BEACH!!!
Roxy

-------------------------------------------------
Spirit of the Game

"Spirit of the Game", perhaps the central governing principle of ultimate. Ultimate players, by their own reckoning, are among the more courtly athletes. Respect for one's opponent is paramount. In contrast to crybaby sports like soccer and basketball wherein skilled thespians refine the art of fouling and being fouled, the official ultimate rules strictly forbid any action—taunting, intentional fouls—that might be construed as bad sportsmanship. "Often," says the introduction to the rules, "a player is in a position where it is clearly to the player's advantage to foul" or rattle his opponent with taunts, but such tactics are considered "a gross offense against the spirit of sportsmanship." Dennis Rodman, stay right where you are.

The most compelling aspect of ultimate is the absence of penalties. In the preface to the rules, the founding fathers of the sport, such trusting souls, "assumed that no ultimate player will intentionally violate the rules; thus there are no harsh penalties for inadvertent infractions." (In fact, there really aren't any penalties at all.) This statement is, in its off-hand way, revolutionary. Imagine a country with no way to enforce its laws other than simply by presuming its citizens would never intentionally violate the law in the first place. Foolish? Naïve? In ultimate-land, it works.

Should some vicious churl choose to flout the Spirit of the Game, the founding fathers conceived of a simple safeguard. In place of referees, the players call their own fouls. For instance, if Jane hacks Mary while Mary is winding up to deliver the huck to end all hucks, Mary simply yells "foul," and it's a foul. Jane is presumed to have hacked unintentionally, and play resumes with Mary's possession. Since players cannot "foul out," a cynic might think it a toothless sort of foul call, but the Spirit so dominates the sport as to make further disciplinary measures unnecessary.

In Ultimate, every player is responsible for their own conduct on the field. There's no refs to make sure that everyone acts like grown-ups, so it's the responsibility of players to call fouls on themselves if the person they have fouled does not call the infraction. That's right. You can call a foul on yourself. Ultimate relies on the honour system and the belief that no one will intentionally cheat, much like marriages, the income tax system, and all-you-can-eat sushi bars. [1]

Ultimate's rules, like any sport's, can take a while to learn. However, they can, for the most part, be summed up by the concept of "Spirit." Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed-upon rules of the game or the basic joy of play. The purpose of the rules of Ultimate is to provide a guideline which describes the way the game is played. It is assumed that no Ultimate player will intentionally violate the rules; there are no harsh penalties for inadvertent infractions but, rather, a method for resuming play in a manner which simulated what would most likely have occurred had there been no infraction. It couldn't be much simpler. Spirit allows the game to be played without refs, without untoward aggression, and without long stoppages in play. It really can't be stressed too much. Spirit is what makes Ultimate so much fun. If you can't relate to the concept of Spirit you might be better off trying a different activity; such as sitting in a darkened room cleaning your firearms and obsessing over conspiracy theories.

--------------

The Spirit of the Game is running after the disc like its the thing you want the most in the entire world, laying out, and making the catch (It's such an awesome feeling). Then, when you think it can't be any better, as you stand up in the endzone, you see not only your team, but your opponents cheering and congratulating you. It's calling a foul on yourself. It's playing at the highest level your capable. It's helping new players keep their forehands from flopping over. And It's definitely a Beautiful Thing. - Mike Costa

Spirit of the game is how you feel when the losing captain comes up after the game to congratulate you, not on the win but on the foul you called on yourself. It is something to be more proud of than the most killer inside-out. - Chris Bostic

"We must have slid 15 feet on our bellies. I was so excited to be playing with so many great people in one place. I had never played with so many fun loving, skilled, weather be damned great people. My opponent was a top player and competing step for step all the way to the end zone on a long huck was a challange in itself, but my first layout D was about a leap of faith that set a fire for my spirit for the game." - Anonymous

The Correlation between the Frisbee Disc and Friendship

by: Pyk

Exhausted. Despirited. Sprained. And losing. Team Herpes slogged to the start zone with bended heads, lazy feet and a 0-3 score against an emerging unassailable opponent. Our team begun to evaporate on a steamy afternoon, wishing to produce a dark cloud to shade the greens. But of course, we were not regulars of the water cycle. We were semis players of the 1st Frisbee Hat Tournament. And Ronron - the team's youngest and best receiver along with Cezar - stepped up to lead the team. We switched gameplan and flashed the opponent a good chase. Now, its 4 all. We robbed them (of scores, daw). Guess, they need ear aids to hear us say, 5-4 next!! Team Herpes is Dj, Joyce, Hannah, Pyk, Ronron, Luan and Cezar. Just 1 of 4 frisbee teams who all carried viral diseases of teamwork, fun and athleteism. Our team defeated Team AIDS and Syphillis with 2-lead points and won 1st runner-up. An amazing feat for exhausted and sprained starters. I opted for an ending that is unlikely from feel-good incorporates. But good stories of real friendships born out of the game are just too irresistable. Yes! Our team indeed robbed not only the final opponent but 2 other teams - we rubbed each others' sprained legs. To the champs: Team Gonorrhea!!

PRESS RELEASE: THE ULTIMATE DURIAN INVASION

The Davao Ultimate Association (DULA) recently concluded the two-week long MILO Ultimate Frisbee Summer Clinic, which ran from April 19 to 29, 2006. The successful and fun-filled frisbee clinic formally introduced the sport, Ultimate Frisbee, for the first time in Davao City. The series of trainings attracted almost thirty (30) new players from various age groups, the youngest being a six-year old who, after a day of disc exposure, gained a backhand to reckoned with.

In the culminating event, both neophytes and experienced Ultimate players participated in the 1st Davao Hat Tournament conducted last April 30 at the DFA Agro Field. Professional Ultimate player, Francis Diano, facilitated the smooth flow of the tournament, providing game tips and strategies to the players he taught for two weeks. And after an entire day of playing under the summer sun, the hyperactive GONO Team, composed of Inigo Jaldon, Julius Macasaet Jr., Bing Alcala, Rianne Lu and David Webb, emerged as the Champion. Indeed, the drills and practices paid off as competitive and disciplined players were honed along the way. Not only that, the Spirit of the Game truly resided in the hearts of these Davao Ultimate athletes.

The MILO Ultimate Frisbee Summer Clinic and the 1st Davao Ultimate Tournament successfully started the disc invasion in the durian city - and as the summer hits its climax (or peak), Davao is sure to expect more from this euphoric and addictive game that already captured the interest of the youngsters, the yuppies, and yes, even the young-at-hearts.

Bing's Blog

by: Bingertz

I had so much fun and an unbelievable energy within me when i played in our ultimate frisbee tournament. gosh. Ang fear ko was may ma-heat stroke sa amin hay sus ilabay jud nako sa river! hehe buti na lang cramps lang. i must say i didnt expect our team to come out as the champions but hell yeah! we deserve it! hehehe...

but honestly, the games we played we're not that 'clean' and wurag 'unsportsman-like conduct' jud kami at times. hehee...ewan ko ba, with Iñigo's coaching, maka-dala jud ang pagiging BULLY hehe... "harass guys!" that's what he'll tell us and oh eto pa "don't be complacent" grabe talga si ñigs oy. but hats off to him and my team mates super lingaw kami and united nga naman kami when we played, all we had was each other (drama)

mabait si Lord kasi ewan ko bakit hyper kami sa Gono. dula gihapon! wura jud ug naka-drugs mi ba! we we're the only team who never had any subs. and fortunately, DJ our german import suffered mild cramps on his toes (perti ka-funny) and his left leg..hehe gi-kamasutra ni BJ buti na lang.

I LOVE THIS GAME! (Ultimate!!!!)

eto mga TOP 10 "idol ko" sa field:

3. Luan - sigh..what would we do without you? Love ka jud ng lahat

4. Raymund - swabe kaayo ang throws...as in EFFORTLESS, very good timing and aim... tsaka team player talga ito.

5. NoyNoy - ewan ko, natatawa talga ako sa takbo mo. perti ka-liit ng steps. galing na handler, sige lang katawa sa field bay! hehe

6. Pyk - grabe mo kabilis! galing ng team mo with Ron2 (give and go), galing na handler! kataw-anan kaayo sa field kay (unconsciously) gina-tuklod ko when he's guarding or kahit nga nasa offense sila (hehehe), tapos biglang tinapik si julius hahhaa... kataw-anan jud!...lub u pyk!

7. Aldrin - Dugay ni siya nawala sa limelight, but he's back with a new phone and really puffy/sored/dead-beat eyes...Jhones! tama sa lagi ang sige'g tan-aw ug po__ sites sa computer ba! hehehe...galing forehand nito. swabe jud as in, unya lingaw kung na-a ni siya kay dili jud ma-hilom ang group kay wurag na-ay radio commentator na naga-istorya prati sa background. hehehe

9. RapRap - ito super enjoy kalaro sa field kasi naga-funny faces jud kami. sige lang kami tawa and kanchawan. maloka ako mag-bantay kasi kabilis-bilis tsaka sige lang takbo.

10. Jade - ewan ko, twisted man ito si Jade oy. sabihan ni Teacher Francis na mag-forehand ayun nag-back, tapos sabihan mag back mag-forehand naman...hehe...tapos one-hand catcher ni bai! tibay kaayo. ang galing ng throws nito. todo bigay. and like all kids, perti kabilis mag-takbo sa field. kuyaw pud mu-block.

(Drama) (intro music)
I must say, the friendship that i have with my ultimate group is truly meaningful. I truly miss their company and i like having them around and just seeing and spending time with them is so much fun. The "spirit of the game" really brings out the best in all of us and i'm not just talking about being better in our throws, in our games, but more profoundly with ourselves. The person we are when we play this game and when we're around each other is, in my case, our 'bestest' self. You are almost sure that everyone is just nice and everyone's being goofy and funny and in a happy mood.
Best of all, the love for the sport in itself ties us all together.

Ok tama na ang drama. The tournament was a blast! It was the first for the STD to play ultimate
for a whole day! It was exhausting but it was all good (",)

peace out... aba!
